The CSI Community Living Room: Where Community Comes Together

The CSI Community Living Room is a neighbourhood level experiment to build community wealth, community enterprise and social enterprises at the ground level.

Focusing on the earliest stages of enterprise development, the CL will be a Next Economy solution that prioritizes equity-deserving entrepreneurship development. We see that these enterprises may stay local or may graduate to our Social Ventures, Climate Ventures and other acceleration programs and funding streams as they grow and evolve. Our goal is to bring enterprise development as another strategy to poverty alleviation while building belonging and community cohesion.”

“This is hands-down my favourite community and coworking space in Toronto. I’d recommend  anyone looking to collaborate with likeminded social entrepreneurs to drop by this place for one of their many events and consider becoming a member. It’s been the best decision for both myself and my business.”

Coming Soon: The Tech Lending Library

The current pandemic, and switch to online everything has made it clear that access to technology and reliable internet is a basic necessity for individuals and communities.  In Regent Park many residents experience limited access to the Internet, especially at-risk youth and school children living who need Internet access to attend school virtually, get help with school, socialize, find opportunities for safe and engaging activities, and for their parents to participate in community projects, receive online access to social workers, doctors and other services.

Having access to technology is having access to success.

With the generosity of the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), and the City of Toronto, CSI is building a Technology Lending Library in the Community for the residents of Regent Park.

The Library will have items like laptops, tablets, mobile internet hubs, and curated peripherals available to local residents, and technology orientation, and cyber security workshops will be offered to all Library patrons to ensure that they have the know how to best optimize the tools they are borrowing.

Not only does this initiative offer digital access, the Tech Lending Library will create local skilled jobs for youth as Peer Support Workers. In this role, the youth will train others, remind about returns, check devices before and after lending, answer simple questions about the use of devices, organize peer-led discussions about cyber-security.

Training will be provided by the technology skills program at The Yonge Street Mission (YSM), which helps to build cooperation amongst agencies in regent park, and stregthen the socail fabric of the neighbourhood.

For many in Regent Park, there are financial barriers to participating in programs like a lending library. The RP Tech Lending Library is offered as a free resource for all residents of Regent Park. following the lead of the likes of the New York Public Library system, CSI has designed a tiered membership approach to borrowing that will eliminate the need for late fee, and instead uses a merit system that incentivises good usage – safe handling of devices, proper booking, ontime returns – for a leveled up membership experience that would include options like longer borrowing periods, and multiple device sign out.

The project will help more than 200 families with students, and other residents, benefit from digital accessibility for school for work, and for community engagement.
